Public transport is plentiful in this highly pedestrian city. Unfortunately, plenitude does not bring about stability. Bus lines have a way of changing so never get too attached to a certain bus number. Always make sure to check the timetables at bus stops to make sure you end up where you had hoped to be and that you're in time for the last bus. Most travellers to the city will probably never see the inside of an ATAF bus as all major sights are within walking distance of each other. Public transportation is really only used by those living in the periphery of the city. However, if you are living in the outskirts or just a connoisseur of public transportation here's what you need to know. There are plenty of buses (ATAF) going around the city. You will find also smaller public electric minibuses whose drivers who bring driving to the heights of art when they manage to fit a bus perfectly on the smallest Florentine lanes. Bus tickets can be bought in tabacchi or tobacco shops and from coin-operated machines. For a monthly card go to the Piazza Stazione service point, which is open 07:15 - 13:15, 13:45 - 19:45, Sat 07:45 - 13:15. Closed Sun. If you are in town for an extended period of time, you can purchase monthly or yearly passes which are valid for both the gas and electric buses. To purchase one of these passes, bring an identification card and two identical photos to Ufficio Abbonamenti, Pensilina Stazione Santa Maria Novella, tel. 055 565 06 42. Open Mon - Fri 07:15 - 13:15, 13:45 - 19:30, Sat 07:15 - 13:15. Closed Sun. For more information call tel. 800 424 500 or take a look at their webpages at www.ataf.net. Once on the bus make sure to validate your ticket as an unstamped ticket is the same as no ticket at all.
Taxi
Perhaps the idea of competition isn't something taxi companies want to delve into, hence the fact that many are named "Taxi". Besides the more creatively named business, we also list areas in which each taxi company has their cars congregate and their telephone numbers. It is always better to call a taxi then to hail one from the street. Although most drivers tend to be fair and honest; just make sure they turn on their meter instead of charging you a flat rate.
