Visitors from outside Europe and some European countries must have a valid passport, and where applicable, an Italian visa - visto. Citizens of EU countries, US, Canada, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Australia do not need a visa for tourist visits up to 90 days. Notable countries whose citizens require a visa for entry are: Albania, Algeria, Belarus, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Egypt, India, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. However, if you plan to take up residence in Italy and you are not an EU national, contact your local Italian embassy for specific details. Most residence visas require application in your home country and (surprise!) a considerable amount of time for processing. Finally, regardless of your nationality, you are advised to register within eight days of your arrival with the foreigners' police (Questura) if your stay in one city is longer than a week. If you are staying at a hotel the staff will be able to take care of this for you. We would be remiss if we didn't mention that we have never heard of anyone getting into trouble for not registering.
